Windows 7 has just been released and Intel has introduced a solid-state drive toolbox that optimizes 34nm X25-M SATA SSD performance for the OS. According to sources at Intel, both the optimizer and complementary firmware update use a Windows 7 attribute known as Trim to make sure there is persistent high performance. Peter Hazen said that this is going to provide an incredible performance boost for the SSDs with a sequential write speed of 100MB per second! The toolbox also offers certain system performance tweaks for Windows Vista/XP.
Trim, which is part of the Windows ATA Data Set Management Command, syncs the operating system’s view of deleted files with those that are deleted, but not erased on the drive. Trim tells the SSD which data blocks are no longer in use. This helps stabilize the performance and health of the SSD over time.
